Natural disasters are always in the news and leave no corner of the Earth unturned. We are working to understand how and why they happen, and how people can be better prepared to withstand them.

Climate Change

Climate change is still a controversial issue.  Some people acknowledge that it is happening but don’t think that humans have a role in it.  Others feel that climate change is primarily anthropogenic (due to human activity).  What kind of information would you like to see in order to make that decision for yourself?

  2. i think that climate change is caused by both humans and nature. I believe it is caused hy nature because nature works its own ways, but i also believe climate change is caused by humans as well because of the human expantion of the greenhouse effect through human activities, like burning fossil fuels. In order for me to choose either side i would have to be convinced, and see visual proof by professional climate scientest, and they will have to explain their evidence of their in what causes climate change.

  3. I believe that a major factor of the climate change is humans. Any burning of fuel releases toxic gases like carbon dioxide and nitrogen dioxide that are hazardous to the environment. The same process is also contributed by all the working factories that give off smoke that’s going into the atmosphere causing it to heat up, causing global warming. After reading through the text book today in class, my first thoughts were correct. The most prominent change in weather is due atmospheric greenhouse gases. The atmospheric temperature rises and melts many ice caps that will flood a number of countries such as Bangladesh and Maldives.

  4. My first thought of what was causing the climate change was us; the humans, because we are polluting the air and it is building up in our atmosphere. The atmosphere is heating up due to the increasing levels of green house gases, which is causing global warming. These greenhouse gases are coming from the factories, cigarettes, vehicles burning gas, and air condition. Global warming is making "the warm months warmer and the cold month’s warmer."(July, S.S)
After reading the text in class today, I realized that my theory was correct because we are polluting the atmosphere and causing the ozone to breakdown and let more UV radiation enter the earth’s atmosphere which is hazardous to all living organisms . Due to the Green House Effect, The heat traveling from the sun through our ozone, gets trapped on earth and causes the temperature to increase.

  5. I want to see if the evolution of the earth is coming closer and closer to the Sun. I would like to see this because I honestly don't believe people can affect it for themselves.I refuse to say we don't also have a role in it but I think things beyond our control may change the weather. Also I have to think about the sun,it may be getting hotter and hotter and only way we would know is if we can find a way to predict each planet climate and temperature change.

  6. In my opinion what I feel is the cause of this wild weather are the human made structures. When I say human made structures, I mean the factories around the globe. Since the Industrial Revolution, the level of pollution has risen, and when the pollution rises then so does the temperature. What I'd like to know is approx. how many factories and power plants have been constructed since the Industrial Revolution and how many are harming the environment. Once I find out what we've done to the planet, I could research what we've done for the planet.

  7. To me climate change happens all year around. Climate changes occur sometimes with seasonal changes of the earth and how it weather is being changed. Due to human activity we cause pollution and and put other harmful gasses into the atmosphere. In this conclusion this is what starts to creat global warming.

  8. Humans have a role with climate change by causing change in Earth's atmosphere in the amounts of carbon dioxide . The biggest contribution is the burning of fossil fuels which releases carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere. The information I would like to see to make this decision for my own is the contributions of the greenhouse gases in the past 2000 years. I need to also see the increase of carbon dioxide since the beginning.

  9. After receiving more data I am still on the side of it's not global warming yet. But what will make my decision change or make it stronger would be seeing professionals' ,in this field, view of it and how they support their answer. Another piece of information would be to see physical evidence and verbally argue why it can or can't be global warming. But until right now, I still believe it is the Earth changing and not much influenced by our activity.

  10. I believe that climate change is affected by humans and their activity. We are starting to notice how much the temperature on earth is warming up more and more each year. We notice how much our weather is changing too. Now we start to see warmer summers and winters. Humans contribute to this problem because of the amount of CO2 we put into the atmosphere. We drive to place where we could walk, and we sometimes don’t do the simple things like disposing garbage in the right places. Information that would help to see if human activity affects climate change would be to compare the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere by human activity and how much the earth’s temperature rises

  11. After having additional information given to me, im starting to beliveve that humans could possibly be apart of climate change. The things we do can effect the environment around us in a positive or negative way. Im not exactly 100% sure that we contribute to the changes but im aware that we have the potential to. Professional research would be a great way to deternine an answer rather than making assumptions. Some research that would be helpful could be having humans do things that can change the climate. Im not sure of some examples that could make a change but if there were some that stood out i would like to see that in action and recorded to find out a answer. For example a chart or graph stating the increse of climate over some years would be a great help.

  12. By more information that I got, I think that the humans had a lot of responsibility on climate changes. Sometimes the humans don't contribute well, I mean like not recycling, trowing trash where not suppose to be, those small things can have a big effect on the climate changes. The climate of the earth had change a lot thru the years. We really need to contribute on it, doing good things for the mother nature because if not we can be in trouble.

  13. For me climate changes have something to do with people. Eventually people are involved in it. To make a point I would like to see some true facts that are scientifically proven. For example, books, science observations or journals and diagrams that require some data.

  14. After previous data I think that climate change is caused by both human activity and nature. For instance nature has the effect of being normal not being human made. A reason why is because, from the past information received I think that climate change is due to the variety of the suns rays hitting the Earth's surface. Look at the Artic, what is happening? The ice burgs are starting to melt making the water level increase. But what's the cause? The cause is due to the fact of the Artic starting to warm up because of the suns rays.. But not just because of nature I think that climate change is also due to the cause of humanity. Not just the human population: meaning that as the population grows the more trash and pollution there will be. Not to say that humanity should not exist but I think that if humanity should cut off their pollution in both cars and toxic wastes in the ocean, lakes, or rivers. If humanity cuts off on what is needed then us humanity can prevent global warming from causing. In this cause we can call decrease global warming. Into forward conclusion climate change is done by both humanity and nature causing global warming.

  15. The recent information that I collected has led me to believe that everything that we do as humans has a full effect on the climate. Every thing we do either has a positive or negative effect on the climate. But there are still things that happen to the climate that are natural and where supposed to happen over time any way. But even though we have an effect on the climate we can control the way we effect it. But overall it is up to us on how we want our climate to be.

  16. I believe human activity did not cause the earth's climate change. Although the biggest climate change took place during the Industrial Revolution I don't think humans caused it. Human activity did effect the climate change, but cannot be blamed as the ultimate cause because humans cannot control nature. To support my beliefs I would like to know many factories were built since the Industrial Revolution and the percentage of the earth's pollution.

  17. When I first read this question, I wasn't really sure what the cause of climate change was. However, I did have a theory: was the distance between the Earth and the sun shortening? I thought this because, if it were true, than it would be a logical explanation for global warming. Unfortunately I was unable to find any answers to my question. But after reading the text book a few days ago, and reading some facts, I began to lean towards anthropogenic. This is because I read that global warming has been a more recent occurrence in the history of the Earth. Also, the amount of carbon dioxide has also been increasing as of late. This is what leads me to believe that global warming is in-fact the fault of humans.

  18. The information that I want to use I'd that pollution is really causing a huge affect toward the way things are. Such as, the ice caps are melting because of the heat, so if the ice caps melt the sea level will rise and the higher the sea level the better chance of flooding and droughts thru the countries in the coast. Bangladesh is a good example of what would happen if the sea level would rise.

  19. In my opinion I I believe that us humans and nature itself have a big part in changing the climate . Human activity such as recycling is good way to keep the earth clean so that global warming does not happen. Nature on the other hand also causes the earth to get hot which make the ice glacier melt causing the sea level to rise, which makes the climate change. So I have to go with both humans and nature has a part in the changing of the climate. I would like to see how much pollution is being led out by cars and factories.
