Tell YOUR Hurricane Sandy story. Some prompts to get you thinking: Did something interesting, scary, or unusual happen to you during or after the storm? What was it like to experience hurricane weather? Did you have any challenges in the days right after the storm? Were any places damaged that are important to you, and how is the recovery for them going now? Please write two well-worded, proofread paragraphs.
My husband and I went outside during Sandy to save our tree. It's only a few years old, and still relatively small without a fully developed root system; the winds pushed it over at a 45-degree angle, and we were only halfway through the storm at that point. I begged him to help me, so we collected two pieces of rebar and some rope from the garage and went outside to tie it up.
We pulled the tree upright, and then I leaned into it with my shoulders - and all my weight - to hold it up while he stuck the rebar into the ground and wrapped the rope around the trunk and steel, back and forth and back and forth. While I was holding up the tree, I looked up at the electrical lines, which were snapping wildly in the wind. Bright blue electricity arced from them as they stretched away from their connections, and I remember hoping they wouldn't come loose. I suppose it wasn't the smartest thing to do, but as a meteorologist and environmentalist, I definitely enjoyed both experiencing a hurricane and saving a tree.
When I heard that the storm was coming I was one of the students that had to stay in the Leahy House, because my home is back in Canada. The house parents all came together to think of a plan so that when the storm hits everyone would be on the same page and things could run smoothly. The plan was to send all the students home that lived locally so that food and other resources wouldn't be an issue in serving everyone.
ReplyDeleteOnce the storm hit it wasn't like anything I wouldn't expect. But during the days of the storm me and the students that had to stay in the Leahy House did face some challenges. The first challenge we faced was when the power went out for exactly 24hrs. At times it was a little hard to operate and go about to do certain things in the dark. Another challenge that we face was everyone started to get grumpy at the whole situation and started to turn on each other. Unlike other places the storm didn't hit us as bad and everyone was safe.
My experience during Sandy was an alright one. Our power went out and we didn't know what we were going to do. Thank God we knew that a friend of ours had a generator that they didn't need Nevada they had their power.
ReplyDeleteOnce we got the generator, another friend of ours, just had a new born baby girl. There house didn't have power nor heat, so they called us up. They stayed over the entire week and it was a pleasure having them. A few days later the power turned back on and we were glad that it did.
My Sandy story was pretty interesting. When Sandy hit my house I was filming a short movie for a film festival in December. As I was filming the wind was howling for hours then all of a sudden, the power when out. Trees were falling in my back yard and fast winds were blowing people off their feet. After the storm there was a week of darkness and robbers clouded the streets. Finally, the power was put on and everything returned to normal.
ReplyDeleteMy experience during Hurrican Sandy wasn't that bad. The power in my house turned off and outside my house there were a lot of trees that were broken. When I passed by the streets I saw a lot of cars either broken or fine. I went to my friends house to charge my phone and watch TV. I went to school and on the 3rd day I was in school, which was a Friday, the power went back on and everything was back to the way it was before Hurrican Sandy.
ReplyDeleteHurricane Sandy was a blast, even though I was mad that my power had gone out. I was on my computer until everything in my house went off. So I decided to go out with my flashlight and hangout with my family. I didn't know how long the power was going to be out for but I hoped that it would come quick. The following day comes and I am mad because I can do nothing since the power was off. So I played soccer durring the hurricane. As the night approaches I am in the kitchen with my family playing board games and the power comes back on. I was happy about it. But afterall I spent a good time durring Hurricane Sandy and got a chance to spend it with my family.
ReplyDeleteI never had to experience a natural disaster, Thanks to God but the disaster that always have my attention is a Tsunami. Is very impressive that all the sea water goes off the coast and goes thru the ground. I always hear that the Tsunami is a huge wave. I agree with that, is an enormous wave with a lot of power running oustside the coast. The Tsunami is very umpredictable and also very destructive. I heard a tsunami in Sumatra, and killed thousands of peole. I really want to see one but I dont want to be on it. Hopefully I can see it on an helicopter or something. The only thing that impress me in a tsunami is that all the water move and go thru everything.
ReplyDeleteMy Sandy experience was relatively unusual. This is not because of what happened, but what didn't happen. Around my house stands multiple 50 foot trees and remarkably, not one fell, not even a large limb fell, only leaves. In addition, during the storm I didn't lose power. I say that I didn't lose power during the storm because I did lose power about two days after, which was both confusing and annoying. So, I just waited for the storm to pass in the safety and comfort of my home. Once the storm passed, I immediately went outside to see the full extent of Sandy's wrath; I was completely shocked to see what happened. I wasn't even 5 minutes from my house when I see what had to be the most damage Sandy did to a house in my whole town; an enormous tree feel onto a house and completely destroyed both the roof and the second floor. And to this day, the house is still not fixed, instead, the owners are trying to sell it as is. In addition, when I went to a nearby park, what used to be a little river was raging. It was even overflowing onto a bridge that it used to run under. Moreover, tree after tree I saw laying in the middle of the street, some even with power lines beneath them. There is also another house about to blocks from me that just got fixed up about two or three months ago; which is a significant amount of time after Sandy. I was in awe from the fact that relatively nothing happened to me, but all these people around me were largely affected.
ReplyDeleteMy Hurricane Sandy experience was very crowded. It started out with a black out when my brother, his two friends, and my mom all decided to sleep away the storm. During the night all of our phones died and when we woke up the house had minor damage to the roof and siding of the house. In the morning we noticed all the lights came on. Our house was 1 out of maybe 30 with power in Roselle. After driving around looking at snapped trees we went home to find that 2 more guests would be staying with us, Aaryn and his mom. They came over with food and a blow up bed to sleep on. Then we got to work by picking up sticks all over our lawn when we noticed someone walking towards out house. It was our friend Ryan who lost power and came over looking for food and wifi. And after he welcomed himself into the house and tapped into our wifi, his twin brother, Randy, also came into our house following the path of his brother. So now we had a total of 9 people to feed. After they freeloaded off my wifi for about 7 hours , the left when they got a call that they had power and Internet with no type of thank you. So now were back down to 7. Khalil, my brother's friend, also left to go to a less packed house. While we were at 6 Aaryn's mom left while Aaryn stayed another night. Back down to 5. After getting a call from Cassidy that we had school, Aaryn and I decided to stay home an extra 2 days. Until finally we were forced to go. They we got back from school to find the house back to normal. I hope we never get hit with a hurricane and have power again it was a nightmare where I only got to eat one spoonful because of the jerks I was staying with.
ReplyDeleteWhen I first heard that sandy was comming I was immediately shocked and I knew it would be crazy. First me and my mom went on a major shopping spree for food we got as much snacks as possible and movies to watch threw sandy. Once the storm started me and my mom where in the living room just watching alot of movies and relaxing the storm seemed to be light but as the night progressed it started to get worse at times I felt like my house was going to blow away. And then at around 10:00 all I hear is a big boom and a transformer blew up and me and my mom where in my now dark house. The power was out and it began to become very cold so we just went to sleep the next day I called my friend Timothy to discover that he still has power so I went to his house. There is was hot and I was comfortable but my mom stayed back in the cold house I felt bad for her she was alone in the dark for about 3 nights . The hardest part was finding gas the lines for gas where very long and we where stuck at home. So that made it very hard to show up to school when it went back in session so we just stayed home and waiting until next week when we could get gas.
ReplyDeleteMy experience with Hurricane Sandy damaged my neighborhood and hurt my family. My house wasn't blown down but two and a half hours into the strong winds and rain, our power went out. It wasn't going to come back on until nine days later.
ReplyDeleteI remember that my father and I went outside during the blackout. I never had imagine how dark a street can get without power. I took a glance down the block and I saw a tree flown on to someone's front steps. This is my experience with Hurricane Sandy.
My Hurricane Sandy experience was positively boring. For the entire storm I was sitting in our living room doing anything to pass the time. I couldn’t use any electrical devices because our power went out early and didn’t come back until almost two weeks after the storm. It was cold, dark, and boring, and to make it worse I had to go to school. In fact, school was the highlight because at least there was light, heat, food and friends. Plus, they cancelled Halloween, so I couldn’t go tricking treating with my friends. Hell couldn’t have been worse.
ReplyDeleteThe only good thing good that came out of this was that I had more time to read and my mom let me use her broken iPod and speaker with a bunch of songs that I liked. The electricity went on and off about four times, so that was annoying. You think everything is back to normal and then everything turns off again. I was so happy when it was all over…
My experience with Hurricane Sandy was not so bad. I never thought the storm was ever going to hit that hard since it was the first storm i had ever experience. By my house there was no damage caused by Sandy, the only thing it did was take the power out. At first it was hard living with no power and it was really boring. After the second day, i got use to it and my neighbors came over and we played manlopoly all day long, that was how we were being entertaind. The bad part of Sandy was that since it cut the power off, it was very cold in my house.
ReplyDeleteLater on during sandy, i walked around my town, many trees ontop of cars, trees crashed into houses, electric wires down in many streets. i was very lucky that no damage was caused in my house. Once everything was fixed and the power came back on, everyone sort of went their own way, and our bond went away, and then it was back to nomal days. That is my experience With the Hurricane Sandy
When hurricane Sandy hit I was shocked on how strong the wind was.
ReplyDeleteWhat grab my attention when sandy came was when the window in my living room fell down and almost hit my dog. I looked outside the window and I felt that huge wind smack to my face .
After that like to minute from watching a movie my power went out . I was so mad cause I had nothing to do in my house , so I went to my friends house and he had two generator one was for the power and one was for the refrigerator so everything stay fresh . My day that day felt so long and boring but atleast I had spent time with the family and friends .
My experience with hurricane Sandy was quite scary. The lights went off and i was stuck home with my family. It was very cold and the things in the refrigerator went bad. I could not watch any television or eat any hot food. We searched for some candles and we lit them up around the house.
ReplyDeleteTaking baths during hurricane sandy was also scary. The bathroom was pitch black and every time i'd close my eyes to wash the soap out of my face, I imagine a bogeyman creeping up on me.

ReplyDeleteAlthough I did not have any problems the rest of my family did. There was flooding in the different areas they lived in. There homes were left powerless as well. To avoid these various issues most of them migrated to my home. As a result my apartment was filled with my family members.
ReplyDeleteMy experience with Hurricane Sandy wasn't the best or the worst for my family and I. The worst I got at my house was loss of power and some flooding in the basement. Yet most of my town were hit by large trees and streets were full of trunks, branches, and roots. Since my town is on a mountain the most damage were caused by trees falling down. A huge tree did fall on our yard but that was the most.
ReplyDeleteThe recovery of my town and my family was actually pretty rapid compared to what others had to wait in other to recover. Since my town has an important, and massive hospital, people from all over were coming in order to maintain the power and keep the patients safe. Yes many trees destroyed homes and cars , my experience wasn't as bad as the others and I can say I was safe and sound.
When I heard that Hurricane Sandy was coming I was scared. I never lived through a Hurricane before and I didn't know what to expect at all. But when it came some scary and unusual things did indeed happen to me. First of all my power went out for about 2 weeks it was the worst. We would have to charge our phones in the cars and that would waste so much gas. People would go around stealing other peoples gas for the generators.
ReplyDeleteWe had to wait on gas lines for hours just to get gas for our cars. After we got enough gas we would have to drive around and buy food to feed our family. It was possibly one of the worst experiences of my life. Luckily the house and my family were safe and sound.
When my mom told me that there was a hurricane hitting our area, I was frightened. I've been through one before but supposively this hurricane was going to be worse. In the beginning of the hurricane, my electricity went out and my generator wasn't working. Also, the rain was piling up on the grass. Once the rain soaked into the grass, it started to go down into my basement where in flood an enclosed area in my basement. I lost power for about a day and a half, which wasn't bad.
ReplyDeleteMy experience wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Well, at least for me it wasn't. Others had trees fall on top of their houses and they lost their power for a long period of time. The recovery of the hurricane was fast, well at least in my area.
